The St Modan's Stone Test of Manhood**...

alt

The stone was found by local wildlife enthusiast and deer manager Dave Kinsman in 1988. He believes that the site where it was found is that of the fabled St Modan’s Well.

His reason for this assumption is that at the site of his find was another much bigger stone engraved with a cross, which sadly is now missing and it's whereabouts are unknown.  But adding to the mystery of the origins of the St Modan's stone is the fact that it is granite which is not an indigenous rock to this area.  It must therefore have been transported here from elsewhere, but why and when remain a mystery.

The St Modan's Stone has been in use since that date as a test of strength to prove a youth’s manhood. If he can lift it to chest height and hold it there, he then proves he has moved from childhood to manhood.

After a long absence from the Highland Games this popular contest has returned and many a youth, from near and far, has taken on the challenge.  Today, to make the challenge even more tempting, anyone over the age of 16 - male or female - who can hold the stone aloft at chest height for the longest time will win a prize!  The prizes are:

1st Prize - £30    2nd Prize - £20   3rd Prize - Bottle of Whisky

£1.00 entry fee

This year we are delighted to announce that the St Modan's Stone Challenge is being sponsored by C J GREENE (PLUMBING & HEATING ENGINEERS) HELENSBURGH.  The Chairman and Committee are grateful for their support.
