Solo Piping...

Welcome by Piping Convener, Mrs Colina Helen Campbell:

Welcome to the 2011 Rosneath Peninsula Highland Gathering Solo Piping competition.  We have now been going for 22 years and the competition increases in popularity and prestige each year.  Entries are coming in daily from all over the country and abroad for this year's competition already and I would remind all competitors that the closing date is 30th June this year.  We also have a senior waiting list and the draw will be put on the CPA website as soon as it is made.  Due to the ever increasing size of the competition all fees are now required in advance along with the entry form, unless otherwise agreed with the Solo Piping Convener, to avoid dealing with cash on the day.  Unfortunately we are no longer able to take entries on the field.

There will be 4 new competitions this year in addition to those we already have.  These are a 'B' Grade March, 'B' Grade Strathspey & Reel, 'C' Grade March and 'C' Grade Strathspey & Reel all of which will take place in the afternoon. The juvenile competitions are all in the morning while the 'B' and 'C' Grade Piobaireachds begin in the morning and carry on in to the afternoon.  The 'A' Grade March, Strathspey & Reel and the Piobaireachd are all in the afternoon.  All times are shown on the entry form but competitors should be aware that these start times are approximate, depending on the number of competitors on the day so it is best to arrive early.

We also welcome once again our prestigous list of judges to Rosneath to whom we are always most grateful as it is a long and very busy day for the judges and the stewards as well as the organisers and the competitors and we are very grateful that so many are willing to come to our competition.

A SHORT HISTORY

THE SOLO PIPING COMPETITION

AT ROSNEATH PENINSULA HIGHLAND GATHERING

1985 - 2011

The solo piping competition at Rosneath Peninsula Highland Gathering ‘could not be more prestigious and is one of the most well organised and prestigious solo piping competitions in the country’ according to one of the senior judges who judged there in 2010 when he spoke to the President of Rosneath Peninsula Highland Gathering last year.

The competition began with three juvenile entries in 1985 and now regularly has over 200 entries worldwide covering 15 competitions. This year competitors include pipers from as far afield as Hong Kong, Germany, Brittany, Denmark, Australia, USA and Northern Ireland as well as top pipers from all over Scotland, making it a truly international event.

Solo Piping Convener, Colina Helen Campbell, one of the first female piping conveners, introduced many new ideas to the event in 1985 which have been supported by the Games Committee.  She also gained support from the College of Piping and sponsorship from Chivas Regal to help develop the event to include juvenile, local and senior competitions and a glittering array of trophies, including the Sir Alex Ferguson Cup for the winner of the A Grade Piobaireachd – the top prize.

In 1994 she was asked to write an instruction on ‘How to run a Solo Piping Competition’ for the German Solo Piping organisation as they were so impressed with the Rosneath event. In 2001 the Competing Pipers Association (CPA) invited her to run a CPA sponsored competition for the ‘B’ and ‘C’ grade piobaireachd – one of only five highland gatherings in the country to achieve this honour. In 2010, due to the continued success of these competitions she agreed to run a further four CPA competitions in the ‘B’ and ‘C’ grades at the 2011 event which have attracted over 100 entries.

Colina’s main aim is to promote solo piping in conjunction with the rules of the CPA, the College of Piping and the National Piping Centre and encourage the development of young players.  Many former chanter competitors at Rosneath are now regular competitors in the top grades which is a testament to the success of the event..  The competition continues to go from strength to strength and has put Rosneath Peninsula firmly on the international solo piping map.
